As we journey through the Advent and Christmas season, we are invited to reflect on the wondrous mystery of Christ’s birth. The star that guided the Magi to Jesus is a symbol of divine guidance, leading us closer to the light of God’s love.
One meaningful way to deepen our prayer this season is through Visio Divina, a sacred practice of “divine seeing.” This prayerful meditation on sacred imagery invites us to encounter the Lord in a personal and intimate way. Let us walk through the steps of Visio Divina, using the image above and the Scripture passage from Matthew 2:2:
“Where is he who has been born king of the Jews?
For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”
Steps of Visio Divina for the Christmas Season
- Visio (See)
Begin by gazing upon the image of the Star of Bethlehem illuminating the quiet town. Allow yourself to rest in the scene—its stillness, its beauty, and its mystery.
Reflect: What stirs your heart as you take in this image? Is it the radiance of the star, the peacefulness of the town, or the journey of the Magi?
Pray: Speak to God about what you notice. Perhaps you feel awe at His glory, or maybe you long for the peace that His light brings. - Meditatio (Meditation)
Turn to the Scripture: “For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him” (Matthew 2:2).
Consider the Magi’s journey—how they left the familiar to follow a distant light, trusting it would lead them to the King.
Ask yourself: How is God guiding me during this Christmas season? What is the “star” I am called to follow in my own life - Oratio (Prayer)
Enter into conversation with God. Use these questions to guide your prayer:
Reflection Questions:- What does the Star of Bethlehem reveal about God’s desire to draw all people to Himself?
- How am I being called to worship and adore Christ in my daily life?
- What gifts can I bring to the Lord this Christmas?
Share your thoughts, desires, and hopes with the Lord, and allow Him to speak to your heart.
- Contemplatio (Contemplation)
Now, simply rest in God’s presence. Sit in silence and allow the light of the Star of Bethlehem to fill your heart with peace and hope. In this moment, let go of words and let God’s love surround you. - Operatio (Action)
Finally, ask yourself how this time of prayer will shape your life moving forward.
Ask: How can I carry the light of Christ to others, especially to those who are suffering or in need this Christmas? Consider a concrete action, such as reaching out to someone who is suffering or offering a small act of kindness to share Christ’s love.
A Christmas Prayer for Peace and Hope
Heavenly Father,
As we gaze upon the Star of Bethlehem, may we, like the Magi, be drawn to the light of Your Son. Help us to follow where You lead, trusting in Your guidance. Fill our hearts with joy and peace this Christmas, and may we share Your love with all we meet.
Amen.
